I am pretty diligent about cleanliness and in my teenage years, even went about some sort of “double cleansing” with a foam cleanser. To many people, (and a what misconception!) a squeaky-clean face is a well cleansed face. Now that I am older and wiser, I know that over-cleansing could have been the cause of all them pesky pimples and acne breakouts that I was so prone to.
Double cleansing with an oil-based AND a water based cleanser? Ugh how tedious.
Many years back, my best friend Becky introduced me to my very first oil cleanser. I remember wrinkling my nose at it. I mean, how is an oil cleanser even a thing? But of course, I had forgotten a simple premise: Like attracts like. A great deal of makeup products are oil based, and using an oil cleanser first will gently and effectively draw out and remove everything, including the sebum, debris (hello, pollution!) and SPF that have accumulated throughout the day. Our favourite has to be the Heimish All Clean Balm! It is easy to use and great for all skin types! We love how its gentle on the skin and gets the job done efficiently.
Water-based cleanser comes after the oil cleanser.
Following the oil cleanser is a lighter, water-based cleanser. This second cleanse works to remove whatever debris that is left on your face after the first cleanse: dirt, sweat, and so on. Now, skin that is not properly cleansed is the root of all evil. Congested pores may begin as whiteheads, progressing on to blackheads and eventually lead to acne breakouts, The turnover rate for our skin will slow down and enlarged pores may become our new reality. As time goes on, our skin may be excessively dry or oily, and discoloration may even occur!
How do I choose the right cleansers for my skin?
First of all, Korean cleansers are uniquely formulated for different skin types. Since everyone has a different skin concern, what works brilliantly for your best friend might not work for you. I’ve been there before. Remember to check the ingredient lists and stay away from ingredients that you’re allergic to. Heavy artificial fragrances can irritate on the skin, so stay away from that too! Always look for cleansers that will nourish your skin, and not strip it of all its natural oils. Now, the good news is…we’ve done the legwork and the hassle of experimenting for you!
Here are our Recommendations!
If your skin is a little on the oilier side, we’d recommend the Heimish All Clean Green Foam. If you’ve got oily/dry AND sensitive skin, go for the Benton Honest Cleansing Foam Cleanser. We love how Benton is especially formulated for those with sensitive skin. In order to make that happen, the Benton team makes a conscientious effort to have all its products dermalogically tested before they go into the market. Finally, if you’ve got normal skin, lucky you! The CosRX Good Morning Low pH cleanser might be your next big thing.
A new habit always necessitates a shift in perspective. It suddenly hit me that the oil cleansing is really just me removing my makeup. I’m not spending any extra time nor adding new steps into my existing cleansing routine; I’m just swapping out my makeup wipes for another product that is thrice as effective. Same same, but different!
So, yes. Double cleansing is a great habit to adopt. (yes, boys, I’m looking at you too) Take care of your skin because it’ll take care of you. You’ve got nothing to lose if you give it a shot!
P.S. If you’re on the double cleansing routine right now but it seems like the condition of your skin has not improved, we know how terrible that feels. Leave us a comment below, or you could hop over to check if you are using the right toner for your skin type.
