My skin goal in 2018: to achieve consistently clear, bouncy, and hydrated skin. Well, let’s just say that some days are a constant battle between my willpower and my pores so…
The 7 Skin routine started in 2016 and hit fever pitch in 2017 and well, it’s still pretty popular. You are essentially patting a hydrating toner into your skin 7 times in succession. No, we’re not crazy, and yes, we’re serious! 7 layers sound like a lot but it was a lovely surprise to discover that it sinks in pretty quickly.
Think of it as wrapping our skin up in layers of lovely, nourishing ingredients so it can penetrate slowly and effectively into the skin. We forget that efficiency is not just about how little time we can spend on one task, but about dedicating the right amount of time that is needed for it to reach its maximum benefits. It’s like gobbling down your meal and then suffering from indigestion after-which is a greater waste of effort after, isn’t it?
7 Skin Fun Fact!
The Korean words for ‘skin” read like this: 피부 (pibu) In Korea, toners are also referred to as skin so… someone literally coined the name of this routine from the phrase, 7 toners.
That being said, there are a few dos and don’ts to this step.
First: Choose the right product for your skin!
Choosing the right product for your skin is of the utmost importance. If you’ve done some quick research on the 7 skin method, you would be aware that you should be looking out for toners without fragrances, acids, harsh alcohols. But also remember, the consistency of the product matters as well. When the product is thicker in consistency, it is more likely to sit on top of your skin and leave it uncomfortably greasy and weirdly sticky. Adjust the toner, or the number of layers. I like to use the back of my hand to pat my face after every layer to check how ‘chok-chok’ it is!
Second: Don’t overdo it.
Our skin’s needs are constantly changing and that also means that we’ve got to adjust accordingly. You probably won’t need to apply all 7 layers everyday-on some days, 3 or 5 layers should be sufficient. Remember, balance = healthy skin. Listen to your skin.
Third: Rushing through the routine.
I feel like we are all culprits of this (somewhat). We tend to rush through our entire day and since skincare is not a priority, we tend to want to “get it over and done with” NOW here’s the real problem: Instead of giving the products time to absorb into our skin, we’re really just piling it on and our skin gets overwhelmed by all! the! patting! and! product! Pat the product in slowly, and wait for it to absorb between layers. When it takes significantly longer for the product to absorb in, it’s probably time to stop.
How to go about this:
Step 1: Cleanse. (Read more about it on “Why Is Double-Cleansing So Important?”)
Step 2: Exfoliate. ( I like to use the Thank You Farmer Back to Iceland Exfoliating Cream for this step! )
Step 3: Start small. Put a dime size of toner on your palm and gently pat the toner all over your face (concentrating on the drier regions) until you get all that product in the right places.
Step 3: Rub your hands together to generate some heat and gently press your palms against your face to help massage and lock in the moisture.
Step 4: Once it feels like the product has been absorbed, repeat from step 2. Stop when your skin feels like its unable to absorb any more! Pat with the tips of your fingers or the back of your palms to feel how ‘chok-chok’ it can be.
Go ahead and apply the serum and finish off apply your serum and finish off with your moisturizer to leave your skin extra plump for the night.
My favourite products for the 7 Skin method are the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner, the Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence and the Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence. I also like the alternate different products between layers to maximize the benefits!
